Theo Paphitis’ Small Business Sunday (SBS) was started in October 2010 to encourage small business owners to pitch to him, showing their passion and energy for what they do. His favourite six SBS tweets each week are retweeted and the businesses behind them become the latest SBS winners.
On 7th October 2013, I tweeted the following:
@TheoPaphitis Dozy dog, wonderful words, refurbished rooms, terrific talent. Intrigued? bit.ly/138K7P4 #SBS
The next evening I was stunned to discover that I had won, on behalf of Wordhouse, after trying for around two years. On seeing the notification that Theo had re-tweeted one of my tweets (not specified) I wanted confirmation it was ‘the one’. I didn’t want to jump to the wrong conclusion while my breath re-started and I dared to hope. Alas, in that not-quite-coincidental way that computers slow down almost to a halt just at the moment you need a fast response, it took much longer than usual. Over ten sweaty minutes I swore my way through the entire alphabet while pacing up and down, stabbing the keyboard periodically. The dogs thought Something Was Up and slunk into another room.
It was true. It is true. Yet for days, I thought I was dreaming.
SInce the win, I have been extra busy and one unexpected outcome has been nominations for two more awards in Ireland, one national and one regional. To add to this, I won two Twitter based awards in January and March 2014.
My best client, a company in Amsterdam, is delighted; Theo Paphitis is a name well-known in the Netherlands. My Twitter following has been boosted to over 2000 and my timeline is now even more interesting and entertaining. I have made some valuable new contacts, and good friends.
Last November I flew over to Birmingham to the 2013 SBS event which was fabulous; so many wonderful people to meet. And yes, I did get the meet the great man himself, and listen to the most inspiring address I have ever heard. That is something I will never forget.
So, if you’re still pondering the question of whether to enter SBS or not, give it a go – you won’t win if you don’t bother! Remember to tweet your business between 5 pm and 7.30 pm every Sunday using @TheoPaphitis and the hashtag #SBS*. You never know, I might see you at the next event as a new winner.
